Why You Feel Exhausted Despite Succeeding in Business—and What to Do About It

Updated: 6 days ago

Success in business can be thrilling, yet it often comes with an unintended price: mental and physical exhaustion. If you find yourself excelling professionally but feeling drained personally, you’re not alone. Let’s explore why this happens and, most importantly, what you can do to restore balance and well-being.

1. Time-Management

Every day, entrepreneurs and professionals face a number of decisions and to-dos — from small logistical steps to major strategic moves – often disrupted by regular interruptions (client or prospect call, etc). This constant juggling can deplete your mental energy and create fatigue. Over time, the mental load takes a toll, leaving you feeling drained even when your business thrives.

What You Can Do:

  • Simplify Choices and Operations: Create routines for recurring tasks to minimize decisions. Create Standard Operating Procedures that your team can follow without needing your assistance. Create time blocks for your major activities to allow your mind to focus and not be disrupted by interruptions. For example, set a specific time each day for email, client calls, etc. If you are handling your own client calls, let your clients know that if they need you, this is the time to reach out or that you will follow up with them within 24 hours.

  • Delegate: Empower your team or hire experts to handle tasks you don’t need to personally oversee – especially if it’s not where you bring the most value (i.e. easily done by someone else for a lower cost) or it’s time consuming because it’s not your expertise (i.e. social media) or it drains your energy. Focus on things where your energy is high.

  • Prioritize Wisely: Focus on high-impact decisions and let go of the rest. Some things likely don’t need your attention and can be dropped or have someone else handle those smaller day to day decisions/to dos.

2. Overworking and Lack of Rest

Success often comes with an ingrained hustle mentality, where overworking becomes a badge of honor. But overworking without adequate recovery time leads to burnout. When your body and mind don’t get the downtime they need, it’s impossible to sustain your energy long-term.

What You Can Do:

  • Schedule Breaks: Add intentional rest periods into your calendar, just like you would for important meetings. You may consider doing 90 sprints and then take some well-deserved time off.

  • Practice Active Recovery: Every day, take a walk, stretch, or engage in a hobby that recharges you. What energizes you, what makes you feel good and fills your cup?

  • Redefine Productivity: Let go of the belief that you have to hustle to succeed. Shift your mindset to see rest as a critical component of success. We have this habit of working harder ingrained in us but when you truly practice mindset, you will find that less is more. In fact, you will achieve greater success when you choose to rest more. This includes your daily rest (relaxing time, sleep time) but also regular vacations.

3. Misalignment with Your Soul’s Purpose

Sometimes, success doesn’t feel fulfilling because the work you’re doing isn’t truly aligned with who you are or what you deeply value. You may feel like you’re achieving goals that look great on paper but leave you feeling empty inside. When you’re out of sync with your true purpose, even small tasks can feel heavy and draining.

What You Can Do:

  • Revisit Your "Why": Reflect on why you started your business in the first place. Does it still resonate?

  • Identify Core Values: Make a list of your top values and assess whether your current work aligns with them or how you can include them more into what you do.

  • Consider a Shift: If necessary, pivot to a path that feels more authentic and aligned with your soul’s purpose. Life is a journey of growth. Sometimes we come to those dead ends as a sign to step into something greater.

4. Lack of Boundaries

When you’re succeeding, the demands on your time and energy tend to increase. Without clear boundaries, you might find yourself constantly saying “yes” to new opportunities, clients, or projects, leaving no room for yourself.

What You Can Do:

  • Learn to Say No: Practice turning down requests AND opportunities that don’t align with your priorities and your goals. Yes, opportunities will come – but are they taking you sideways or are they moving you forward?

  • Set Work Hours: Define specific hours for work and stick to them, creating space for personal time. This is especially important if your core values are around family. Not setting those boundaries can make you feel like you are failing in your personal life.

  • Communicate Clearly: Let clients, colleagues, and loved ones know your boundaries.

  • Delegate: Where-ever you don’t add value or wherever you feel a task is depleting you – it’s a sign to either ditch or delegate. Revisit everything you do under that lens.

5. Neglecting Your Physical and Emotional Health

As you focus on scaling your business, it’s easy to neglect your own health. Skipping meals, sacrificing sleep, or sidelining exercise in the name of productivity can leave you running on empty.

What You Can Do:

  • Invest in Wellness: Prioritize nutritious meals, regular exercise, and mindfulness practices. In addition to meditation, you may want to try breathwork!

  • Check In with Yourself: Regularly assess how you’re feeling physically and emotionally. Listen to your body! There are times to push through, there are times to rest.

  • Create Non-Negotiables: Decide on a few health habits that you’ll stick to no matter what.

6. The Pressure of Perfectionism

High achievers often place immense pressure on themselves to perform perfectly, which can lead to feelings of inadequacy and constant stress. The pursuit of perfection can be both exhausting and paralyzing.

What You Can Do:

  • Aim for Progress: Focus on making consistent progress rather than achieving perfection.

  • Celebrate Wins: Take time to acknowledge and celebrate your accomplishments, big or small.

  • Be Compassionate: Treat yourself with the same kindness and understanding you’d offer a close friend.

Taking Steps Toward Realignment and Renewal

The first step to overcoming exhaustion is recognizing that something needs to change. From there, take actionable steps to realign with your purpose and create sustainable practices that support your success and well-being.

Success doesn’t have to come at the cost of your mental and physical health. By setting boundaries, revisiting how you spend your time, aligning with your true purpose, and prioritizing your well-being, you can thrive both professionally and personally. Remember, the goal isn’t just to succeed—it’s to succeed sustainably and joyfully. You’ve got this!
