Burnout is real!
As entrepreneurs, we will experience burnout most often in the early stages of the business when there are so many things to do, learn, try and when the business has grown substantially, and the systems/automations or support team may not be in place.
On the solopreneur journey, a few things stand out for me. I went through a phase of the harder I worked, the less it seemed to work - it only left me drained.
I also remember feeling overwhelmed, pulled in different directions - trying to listen to so many experts or various people's advice "you should do this, you should do that" - only to end up with a long list of to-dos, trying out a bunch of different strategies but none of them really worked.
My biggest lesson: success doesn't come from trying harder - it comes from alignment. In fact, trying harder is usually part of the problem. See, what I didn’t know early on in my journey was that force negates. From an energetic or frequency standpoint, when you try harder (i.e. force), you end up pushing your goal away because you are on the wrong frequency (it’s a frequency of lack).
Here are some of the things that have helped me overcome burnout.
I like to start with the basics so I take the time to ask myself: do I even have the right goal? Does this goal truly excite me, inspire me, gets me out of bed every day? So many times we settle for what we think we should do, or what we believe we can do, what society or friends tell us and eventually, it leads to burnout.
Once I have identified my goal, I like to do the 7 levels deep exercise and truly reconnect with my WHY. Why am I doing what I’m doing? Sometimes we get so caught up in the to-dos we lose track of the why and that’s where the burnout comes from. Reconnecting with your “why” can help you get back in alignment.
Let’s be honest, burnout happens because we are stuck in a cycle. For me, I was stuck in that do-do-do cycle, try harder, “wanting my goal” instead of coming FROM my goal and acting in alignment. But it’s easier said than done. Yes, I had some nasty paradigms that were keeping me in this cycle.
You may wonder, what is a paradigm in the first place? It’s a series of beliefs and habits burned as a program in our subconscious mind. The program that’s burned in our subconscious mind becomes our operating system and it controls 95% of everything we think, feel, do and attract. Our subconscious mind is filled with beliefs and habits (i.e. paradigms) – some of them are serving us, some are not – and those are the ones keeping us stuck in a cycle. Let me give you a couple examples.
When I started my business, I had never been in the world of entrepreneurship before and my only experience with sales was sadly your sleezy car sales man or the people who knock on your door who were quite pushy. Needless to say, my perception of “sales” was not the greatest and this became part of my programming. So how did this translate into burnout? Well, this sales paradigm I had did 2 things: One is that it held me back from taking the actions I needed to take, calling or reaching out to prospective customers for fear of sounding too salesy, too pushy. And if somehow I got into a sales conversation, I found myself unable to close – because I never wanted my customer to feel like someone took advantage of them (i.e. my former experiences). So yes, I found myself spinning my wheels and trying harder, only to end up nowhere and burning out.
The other paradigm that was engrained in me since childhood was that “to be successful or to earn a lot of money, you have to work hard.” Well, that’s exactly what I kept attracting into my life. I was stuck in this cycle of do more, work-work-work, working long nights, sacrificing family time, waking up exhausted – with nothing to show for it.
The solution? I had to change my paradigms and adopt new beliefs and habits that were serving me and in alignment with my goal. Don’t you like the idea that success can be easy and effortless? I sure do! And it can become your reality too!!
I’ll leave you with a few day-to-day tips that have helped me along the way:
Meditation is a great way to relax the nervous system, shut out all senses, the 100-mile an hour thoughts, and recenter. Put on some relaxing music, focus on your breath and let go of everything – even if it’s just for 5 minutes. Building in those 5 minute breaks throughout my day – especially on busy days, has been a life-saver (and sanity saver LOL).
Get outdoors. Nature is grounding. Go reconnect with nature, feel the warm sun on your skin and soak it in. Again, even if it’s just 10 minutes where you just relax and recenter.
Do something that makes you happy every day, that brings you joy and energy. Make self-care non-negotiable, just like you brush teeth.
Get moving – whether it’s a walk or a more intense work-out, get that blood moving! You’ll feel a whole lot better.
Put more fun into your business. Remember that force negates. So have fun doing what you do, MAKE it fun. You’ll find that it will elevate your vibration to a new level and things will be a lot easier!
Learn to say NO! Opportunities will come, people will demand your time, etc… It is okay to say NO. If it’s not in alignment with your vision and your goal, if it’s not what you truly want to do – give yourself permission to say NO. Guard your time like the precious commodity that it is.
Don’t let your business run you – you run it! Start with your ideal schedule in mind and work your way backwards. Start adding to it those things that you truly value and activities that truly make an impact towards your goals and move you forward. Whatever doesn’t fit, consider delegating (if it can’t be automated) or ditching. This exercise will force you to look at where you are not getting a great ROI on your time/effort and focus on the things that do work.
